The Schimke Ranch (Rockin AS) is located in the hill country of northwest Jerauld County, South Dakota. It is 18 miles northwest of Wessington Springs, SD. I’ll admit, we’re a bit off the beaten path, but it is well worth the drive to check out the quality quarter horses I have to offer. We are 45 minutes north of Interstate 90, or 20 minutes east of U.S. Highway 281.

The Schimke Ranch was established in 1906, and has always been a working cow/calf operation. Currently we are producing Simmental, Angus, and SimAngus cattle on this operation. Mother cows are typically AI bred each season to produce replacement quality females, easy fleshing feeder cattle. We currently have heifer calves for sale sired by 3C Macho, 3C Lava, Ellingson Legacy, and UC Okaton (a SimAngus son of Meyer 734 purchased from Christensen Simmental). Since quarter horses are used on the Schimke Ranch for much of the cattle work, cow sense, good minds, and stability are a must have. Amy runs barrels and Brett does mounted shooting when they are not working on the ranch, so therefore have found that the quarter horses bred to be outstanding ranch horses will also excel in the arena. Be it roping, shooting or barrel racing, the quarter horses we are raising here have what it takes to get the job done. In mixing the speed and cow bloodlines, we feel that we are getting the best of both worlds in our performance horses.

We are raising the type of quarter horses that we like to ride. You will not find a single animal in our breeding program that is not proven in one aspect or another. We are striving for QUALITY, not quantity. We only run around a dozen broodmares, but EVERY quarter horse mare has been proven either in the arena, on the track, or as a producer. The same goes for the quarter horse stallions. Our theory is that stallions should be more than just "mare breeders". Both of the stallions that stand here have all done their share on the ranch and in the arena both, and our senior quarter horse stallion, Frostman San Peppy, is an example of what a performance stallion should be. He is the total package. Our young stallion, Firewater Finale, is learning the ropes on how to be a ranch horse at this time, but will be shown in barrel futurities either as a 4 or 5 year old.
